Sports program of the 56th Mimosa Festival: 11th "Đorđe Konjević" Memorial Tournament

The sports program of the 56th Mimosa Festival began with the 11th "Đorđe Konjević" Memorial International Chess Tournament, organized by the Chess Club"Herceg Novi 1949", with the support of the Municipality of Herceg Novi and the Chess Federation of Montenegro.

This year, more than 50 competitors are participating, and the organizers and the Konjević family have provided trophies for the three first place winners, 12 regular and 5 special prizes.

The tournament was officially opened by Đorđe Arnaut in front of the Secretariat for Social Activities and International Cooperation, who pointed out that Herceg Novi is recognized as a good place for the development of chess and where generations of chess players find inspiration for numerous and significant results on the domestic and international stage.

"We owe a great deal of gratitude to the organizer - the Herceg Novi 1949 Chess Club, which makes a full contribution to the organization of chess events, keeping the successes of chess greats from being forgotten," said Arnaut.

Along with the representative of the aforementioned secretariat, the first steps were taken today by the representative of the Secretariat for Economic Development and Investments, Vido Spaić and Nikola Samardžić from the Agency for Construction and Urban Development.

Slavica, Đorđe Konjević's daughter, also spoke briefly, emphasizing that her father would be very happy and proud that the tournament exists and survives, but that it is getting better and better every year.

In front of the Chess Club "Herceg Novi 1949", the participants were also greeted by Miloš Bubanja, who for his contribution to the organization of chess tournaments and the hospitality shown, sent special thanks to the director of the Igalo Sports Center and Hotel "Play", Radovan Ralević.

A certificate of appreciation was also presented to a long-time friend of the Chess Club "Herceg Novi 1949", the secretary of the Chess Club "Mimoza" from Tivat, Josip Staničić, a long-time friend of Đok Konjević - FIDE master and captain of the Chess Club "Herceg Novi 1949", Miomir Savić, as well as to the president of the Municipality of Herceg Novi, to Stevan Katić.

Awards from the family were presented to the president of the Chess Federation of Montenegro, Jovan Milović, and the secretary of the club, Miloš Bubanja.

The main referee of the tournament is the international referee, Željko Miljanić.

On this occasion, Bubanja also announced a chess spectacle that will be held in Herceg Novi from May 1 to 8 - our city will host league competitions - Premier First and Second League, Pioneer and Women's League of Montenegro, which will bring to Herceg Novi more than 450 competitors.
